Linn believed she could manage a life of unhappy complacency - of shutting out the ills of the world around her in quiet indignation. However, the events that escalate within this dystopian series force her to engage the world, discover her convictions, and fight for them. The story takes place in an unstable and war-torn land. Extremist groups have seized control in the wake of multiple crises, and these groups continue to contend with one another for control over as much of the land as possible. The dominant Faction has founded a small collective of schools called the Ashes Institute with the intent of training the youth to stabilize and restructure the country. This institute draws in young people who meet their qualifications at random. Linn's journey begins with her recruitment into one of these academies.
